Accreditation Service for International Colleges

Accreditation Service for International Schools, Colleges and Universities (ASIC) is an independent international educational accreditation agency based in the United Kingdom. ASIC has been appointed by the United Kingdom Government's Home Office UK Border Agency to inspect colleges prior to applying for sponsors licences from the UK Border Agency〔https://www.gov.uk/study-visit-visa/eligibility〕〔http://www.collegeadmissionsservice.com/2011/02/institutions-accredited-by-uk-border.html〕 and is on the List of recognized higher education accreditation organizations for accrediting institutions of higher education.〔http://www.minglebox.com/article/study-in-uk/uk_higher_education_accreditation_bodies〕

ASIC is one of the accreditation bodies since 2007 that was recognized by the now superseded UK Border Agency,〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Guide AN )〕 By 2009 ASIC had accredited 180 institutions. ASIC has accredited 148 colleges and universities in the UK,〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=UK College Directory )〕 around 80 worldwide in which 15 of the 80 are US institutions.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=International Directory )〕〔http://www.asicuk.com/international-directory/〕
In 2009 The Times newspaper discovered that Maurice Dimmock, ASIC's director and chief officer, had been fired in 2003 from his job at Northumbria University as director of overseas operations. The article stated that the newspaper had "established that the Home Office received, and ignored, concerns about ASIC and Mr Dimmock before it granted the company a contract. Northumbria University wrote to the Home Office in May 2007 to question the role the company was about to be given in distinguishing between genuine and bogus colleges." Shortly after the complained Universities UK, the advocacy group for British Universities, complained to the UK Immigration Minister concerning ASIC's being given an accreditation role in immigration. In a letter to the Home Affairs Committee Advocacy UK wrote "There is a lack of information and transparency about (ASICs) management, governance and financial structures. Several of the colleges that it accredits have been associated with inappropriate activities." The response to this was a statement that the decision was made on the basis of the government Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills's report in 2007 that they were satisfied with the way ASIC was operating. ASIC responded to the charges concerning their work distinguishing between genuine colleges and those acting fraudulently had been hampered "by the Home Offices refusal to tell ASIC how many student visas were issued for each college it inspects."
* July 2009, ASIC submitted a response memorandum providing answers to a letter written by Diana Warwick, Baroness Warwick of Undercliffe, Chief Executive, Universities UK expressing concerns about the decision to approve the Accreditation Service for International Colleges (ASIC) as one of the accreditation bodies within the new immigration system. In the letter, ASIC provided information as to their accreditation process and how colleges are inspected〔http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200809/cmselect/cmhaff/595/595we07.htm〕
* September 2012, ASIC became a member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation CHEA's newly launched Chea International Quality Group (CIQG) to advance understanding of international quality assurance and to promote higher education through international accreditation bodies.〔http://cheainternational.org/pdf/CIQG%20Members.pdf〕
* May 2013, the United Kingdom's Government posted an article from the British Embassy of Bangkok introducing ASIC's efforts on university accreditation in Thailand.〔https://www.gov.uk/government/world-location-news/university-accreditation-in-thailand〕
